In Memory of Timothy Lomas, the Global Children’s Art Programme’s (GLOCAP) Co-Founder

Timothy co-founded GLOCAP in response to a tragedy. After the 2004 tsunami, he volunteered in Khao Lak, Thailand. In the mornings, he carried cement and poured foundations to rebuild homes and, in the afternoon, visited children in the relief camps to make art. For these homeless and often orphaned children, art-making became a normalizing activity allowing them to express trauma and aspire to recovery. Since then, GLOCAP has provided nurturing arts programs for underserved children in Thailand, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Greece, Turkey, and Chad.

Timothy was full of love, kindness, gentleness, strength, laughter, compassion, curiosity, and acceptance of others. Children were immediately drawn to his open heart, humor, appreciation and respect that he felt for them. He possessed an inner wisdom and trusted that the universe would somehow provide. When confronted with adversity his discipline would prevail. Understanding that life is sometimes in our control and sometimes not, he lived with the belief that one has the ability and choice to break ground and rebuild.

GLOCAP continues to reach hundreds of young people through the visual and performing arts. As Timothy often reminded us, “Even in tragedy lie the seeds of regeneration. Make the choice to plant those seeds because they will grow into what comes next.”
